Drake

If drakes are related to the dragons of old, they got the short end of the stick when it comes to appearance. With their big bellies, mottled scales, four stumpy legs, and fangs protruding from all directions, the people of the mountains see them more as a nuisance than a great peril, albeit a very big, dangerous nuisance. A drake can eat a cow per day—or the farmer if he gets in the way.

A hunter can make good money by ridding the farmlands of them as they invade down from their mountain perches, searching for easy prey. Their fire can leave quite a scar, but if you’re prepared, they can be taken down with relative ease.

I’ve not had the opportunity, yet, to study the drake in its mountain perch, and would very much like to observe its behavioral patterns. As a young student on a visit to the Tower, I did get the chance to study the innards of a young drake on a massive dissection slab. I believe its resemblance to the dragon is more than coincidence, as its gaseous sac is situated between its four lungs, quite similar to a dragon’s, as evidenced in an ancient, battered tome I once saw in the Kowal library. The drake may be a descendent of those powerful beasts, or perhaps it was the dragon that descended from the drake. Either way, against all odds, it is the drake that still survives today.
