Night Hag

Stalking the night hag remains my greatest shame as a hunter.

Dazareum and Etahn begrudgingly agreed, at my insistence, that we would not only free the hag’s coerced minions but that we would capture the creature alive. We had the means, and by bringing it back alive, it would teach us more than we could imagine about Navirites. I was sure could have spent the subsequent years studying nothing else.

But then I saw its minions and everything changed. I was disturbed to my core at seeing these former people come toward us, driven by nothing but hunger for flesh. Severed from their minds and souls, there was nothing left of them to save. When called into the void, a person should have the right to die with dignity; these unfortunates were given no such boon. The best thing we could do for them was to set them free—by destroying them.

So, we dispatched the minions and came to an unspoken agreement. The night hag would die this night. No chance could be taken that she would inflict this wickedness on even one more innocent.

When we reached her, those intentions were cemented when we discovered that her chamber was filled with even more of her zombie minions, along with captives as yet unturned, wailing in abject fear as they awaited their own inevitable demise and reanimation.

Overcome with horror, disgust, and fury, we slaughtered the hag, and I am ashamed to admit that I took a certain grim pleasure in dragging her death out. Come the next day, however, my conscience weighed heavily. We saved many lives that night by taking that creature’s life, but had we taken her back to the Tower for study, we might have saved so many more to come, for she was certainly not the last of her kind.

Night hags. Gross creatures. They feed on fear and nightmares. The one we faced had been using a town to try and create an unholy army. I had never seen such a thing, humans turned into vessels of the energy from the Navirim. There was no saving them.

We fought our way down into the witch’s inner sanctum. Her blank eyes were set in a pale and withered face, sunken back into her skeletal head. Stringy white hair shot out in all directions, her thin lips parted in a hideous smile of crooked yellow teeth. She was taller than us, well over six feet, and deathly thin, her frame appearing even more slight than the tattered and filthy rags stolen from corpses that she piled on her disgusting body.

As we approached, she battered us with her magic as her minions attacked us, but they could not hold us back. We were there to pay her back for the things she had done to these innocent people. While my arrows had little effect, my blade cut through, and she and her awful reign of terror came to an end.

Dream Haunting

While carrying her Heartstone, a night hag can enter the dreams of a sleeping creature she has previously encountered. The victim suffers 1 CON damage, cannot recover mana from that rest, and loses 2 mana upon waking.

Demon Fever

A creature damaged by the night hag’s Bite must make a Difficult CON save. On a failure, the victim contracts Demon Fever and suffers 2 CON damage. The victim makes another CON save after each full rest. Two consecutive successful saves cure the disease.

Innate Magic

A night hag possesses an innate connection to the Navirim and may cast the following spells without needing to prepare them:

Mage Bolt (3 mana), Enfeeble (3 mana), Sleep (3 mana).

The night hag uses its Spellcraft 85% when casting these spells.

Etherealness

While carrying her Heartstone, a night hag can use a Standard Action to shift between Atheles and the In-Between. She can remain in the In-Between for up to 10 rounds before returning. While there, she cannot physically interact with creatures or objects in Atheles.

Heartstone

Each night hag carries a magical stone bound to its essence. While carrying the Heartstone, the hag gains +10% to all Characteristic saves, immunity to disease, and can use Dream Haunting and Etherealness.

A Heartstone is worth 1,800 gp, but loses its magical properties 24 hours after the hag dies or is permanently separated from it.

Ritual of the Dream Mark

A night hag can perform a one-hour ritual upon a helpless creature, carving Navirite symbols into its flesh and binding its life essence to the hag. A Dream Marked creature becomes a mindless servant of the hag. Its stolen life essence can also be used to empower a Pool of Pain. The Mark can be removed with Dispel.

Pool of Pain

A Pool of Pain is a Navirite cauldron created by a night hag and empowered by the life essence of Dream Marked victims. Its abilities increase according to the number of souls bound to it.

SoulsEffect
1+Touching the Pool inflicts 3 CON damage. A successful CON save reduces this to 1 CON.
3+Creatures entering within 60’ must make an ACU save or become Frightened.
5+The hag can project her consciousness into the Navirim through the Pool.
10+The hag can open a tear into the Navirim for 1 minute, allowing one creature to pass through.
20+The tear remains open for 10 minutes and allows up to three Medium creatures or one Large creature to pass through.

Covey Leader

Night hags naturally dominate gatherings of their lesser kin. A covey consists of three hags, with the night hag serving as its leader. While within 30’ of at least two other hags, the night hag adds +1d6 damage to damaging spells.

Resistant

Night hags are naturally resistant to magical energy.

Dark Vision

Night hags can see using only the faintest light source, extending their vision to three times the distance of the light source, up to 90’.
