Drueglem

A short, squat creature that is muscled and covered in a roughly textured skin. Its dark eyes catch the torchlight as it turns its block-like head in your direction, an unnatural deadness reflected in the dim light. Its thick arms reach the ground where massive hands slowly flex.

Only once have I faced a drueglem, deep in an underground lair where an ancient wizard had tasked one to guard a room. They are just that: a single-minded creation meant to follow simple orders. They are not particularly powerful, though they have a tough hide and seem to absorb most damage. They can eventually be taken down with mundane weapons, so if you face one, fear not. Just keep hacking.

—Etahn

It is exactly this impulse in Etahn that disturbs me. We know so little of the drueglem, but by all appearances, it is but a supernatural slave. What are we to conclude from its apparent lack of will? Perhaps it is the victim, stripped of drive, compelled only to follow the orders of the magician who summoned it.

Regardless of what one might conclude about the creature’s nature, the fact that this creature is so simple of mind provides the opportunity to trick or distract it rather than, as Etahn so eloquently put it, “just keep hacking.”
