Clay Golem

A massive monstrosity of fired earth, clay golems are fearsome foes. They can be carved in all manner of shapes, but a large humanoid is most common. Clay golems are prone to have bouts of uncontrolled violence, striking anything near it during combat. They are also capable of great speeds in combat, despite their large and cumbersome size. And lastly, any wound a clay golem inflicts remains open and debilitating until some kind of magical or supernatural healing is applied.

SIZ Note

Large (SIZ 25) = -10% to Hide, Stealth, and Dodge (already applied).

Hardened Clay

A clay golem’s magically fired body is substantially tougher than an ordinary construct. It has 70 HP instead of the normal 50 HP provided by its SIZ.

Clay Grip

The golem can reshape its hands around anything it strikes. After successfully hitting with a Slam, the clay golem may attempt a Grab against the target. The golem and target make an opposed Grapple Heroic Action. While maintaining the grapple, the golem may Slam the grappled creature normally.

Cracked Shell

As the clay golem is damaged, its hardened shell fractures and releases the magical force trapped inside.

When reduced to 1/2 HP or less, its AV decreases by 2, its Speed increases from 30’ to 40’, and its Slam attacks gain +1d6 damage. These effects remain until the golem is repaired above 1/2 HP.

Earthen Reconstruction

If the clay golem is standing on exposed earth, stone, or clay, it may spend a standard or move action pulling surrounding material into its damaged body. The golem regains 2d6+6 HP. Earthen Reconstruction cannot increase the golem above its maximum HP of 70.

Each use also restores 2 points of lost AV from Cracked Shell if the healing raises the golem above 1/2 HP.

A clay golem can use Earthen Reconstruction twice per day.

Bend Sound

The vibrations created by bend sound resonate through the clay golem’s hardened body. A clay golem takes double damage from bend sound.

Golem Traits

The clay golem has all standard Golem Traits: immunity to critical hits, mind magic, disease, death effects, paralysis, poison, sleep, stun, and effects requiring a CON save. Damage from spells is reduced by 50% unless otherwise noted. It has Darkvision 60’. A golem does not normally Dodge or Parry unless its instructions specifically command it to defend itself.

Reagents & Remnants

Golem Core (Remnant)
The crystal or glass sphere used during the golem’s creation ritual. Although much of its animating magic dissipates when the construct is destroyed, enough remains within the core to make it valuable for magical crafting and the creation of other constructs.

Special Abilities

Berserk
At the start of each combat round, there is a cumulative 1% chance that the golem’s elemental spirit breaks free, causing it to attack the nearest living creature or object indiscriminately. Once berserk, it cannot be brought back under control.

Cursed Wound
Damage dealt by a clay golem cannot be healed naturally and resists magical healing. Casting a healing spell on a victim requires a Difficult Spellcraft check or the spell has no effect.

Construct Traits
Immune to disease, death effects, mind-affecting effects, paralysis, poison, sleep, stun, and any effect requiring a Fortitude save.

Haste
Once per day, after at least 1 round of combat, the clay golem can become hasted, allowing it to move at double speed and gain an extra attack..

Immunity to Magic
Certain spells affect the clay golem differently:

  • Bend Sound: Does double damage.
  • Shape Earth and Stone: Slows the golem by 1/2 and negates one attack.
