Hulking Horror

Hulking horrors are the bane of underground explorers. They would stand around 7’ tall, if they stood fully erect, and weigh about 700 lbs. They have general appearance of a gorilla covered in bony plates, with large wide-set eyes, and two large insect-like mandibles on either side of its mouth.

They are incredibly strong and resilient, and one must be careful not to become caught between those powerful jaws – death usually follows quickly if that happens.

Mandible Grapple

A hulking horror’s massive mandibles can seize creatures up to 10’ away.

When a Mandible attack hits, the hulking horror may immediately attempt an opposed Grapple Heroic Action. If the horror succeeds, the target becomes Grappled.

The hulking horror can use both its mandibles and its powerful arms to grapple. It may make two Grapple Heroic Actions each round, either against two different creatures or twice against the same creature.

A grappled creature may attempt an opposed Grapple Heroic Action on its turn to break free.

Vibration Sense

A hulking horror can sense the location of moving creatures in contact with the ground within 60’, provided the horror is also touching the ground.

Vibration Sense does not require a direct line of sight. If there is no straight path through the ground between the horror and its target, determine range using the shortest connected path through the ground.

Vibration Sense can detect movement through water when the hulking horror is itself in contact with the same body of water.

Reagents & Remnants

Mandible (Remnant)
The enormous insect-like mandibles of a hulking horror are extraordinarily hard and retain a naturally serrated edge. They are prized for crafting blades, traps, and reinforced tools.
Value: 150 gp each
Harvesting Difficulty: Average

Tremor Organ (Reagent)
A cluster of sensitive organs running along the horror’s limbs allows it to detect minute vibrations through stone and earth. Properly preserved, these organs can be used in magical items that detect movement or creatures through solid surfaces.
Value: 300 gp
Harvesting Difficulty: Very Difficult

Bony Plate (Remnant)
The thick plates protecting a hulking horror are surprisingly light for their strength. Large intact sections can be incorporated into shields and heavy armor.
Value: 50 gp each (1d4+2 usable plates)
Harvesting Difficulty: Average
