Ship Rank Definitions:

Command

Captain

The master of the vessel. The Captain has final authority over navigation, combat, trade, diplomacy, and the welfare of the crew.

First Mate

Second in command. The First Mate oversees the crew’s daily work, discipline, watches, and assumes command if the Captain is absent.

Navigator

Guides the ship through the Fold and plots safe courses between Waygates, stars, and hazards. Every spacer knows a Navigator is worth their weight in gold.


Deck Officers

Helmsman

Steers the vessel during normal travel and combat under the Captain’s orders.

Boatswain

Responsible for maintenance, rigging, sails, anchors, deck equipment, and assigning daily labor.

Quartermaster

Maintains cargo manifests, provisions, wages, and supplies. On merchant ships they often negotiate purchases and sales.

Cargo Master

Supervises loading, unloading, securing cargo, and maximizing available cargo space.


Engineering

Chief Engineer

Maintains the ship’s engines, magical drives, life-support systems, and mechanical equipment.

Shipwright

Repairs hull damage, structural components, and emergency field repairs while underway.

Rigger

Maintains sails, rigging, maneuvering fins, and external equipment.


Combat

Master Gunner

Commands all siege weapons aboard ship and directs firing during combat.

Gunner

Operates ballistae, catapults, bombards, cannons, or magical weapons.

Marine Sergeant

Commands the ship’s marines and boarding parties.

Marine

Protects the vessel from boarders and serves during boarding actions.

Armsmaster

Maintains weapons, armor, ammunition, and trains the crew in combat.

Ship Mage

Waygate Specialist
