About the map
I have been doing a lot of research on Tolkien for an upcoming Saga zine, and got inspired to do a VTT map for Khazad Dum! Here is the bridge for all your balrog battle needs.
I always wondered why the bridge was so narrow, but then recently found out it was built this way on purpose. This made it very defendable, but I wonder how they got wagons across it!
“Suddenly Frodo saw before him a black chasm. At the end of the hall, the floor vanished and fell to an unknown depth. The outer door could only be reached by a slender bridge of stone, without kerb or rail, that spanned the chasm with one curving spring of fifty feet….They could only pass across it single file. At the brink Gandalf halted and the others came up in a pack behind.”
—The Fellowship of the Ring, “The Bridge of Khazad-dûm”
Also known as Durin’s Bridge, it spanned a massive excavated chasm from deeper in the halls to the outer gate. the famous location of the battle between Gandalf and the Balrog of Moria, casting the bridge down which led to the downfall of the Balrog.
